Sinopec Engineering won Zhong Tian He Chuang Ordos Coal-To-Olefins

China Coal to build world largest CTO complex

2B1st_Project_Smart_Explorer_Sales_Pursuit_ToolSinopec Engineering Group (SEG or Sinopec Engineering) has been awarded by Zhong Tian He Chuang Energy Corporation  Limited (Zhong Tian He Chuang) the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to design and build the world largest Coal-To-Olefins (CTO) plant at Uxin Banner near Ordos, Inner Mongolia.

Established for the purpose of this $3.2 billion capital expenditure CTO project, Zhong Tian He Chuang Energy Corporation  Limited (Zhong Tian He Chuang) is a joint venture between China Coal Energy Company (China Coal) and the Sinopec Group (Sinopec) with 38.75% interests.

China holds the third largest coal reserves in the world after USA and Russia.

In the same time, China is one of the world largest consumer of petrochemical products.

Sinopec_China-Coal_Ordos_CTO_Project-MapDespite intensive investments in the downstream industries, China import 45% of its ethylene and should not become self sufficient in petrochemicals before 2035.

In this context the monetization of its coal reserves through the petrochemical industry has got the same level of priority in China as the coal-fired power generation.

In both cases, the environmental foot print and related costs are key challenges on which the Chinese engineering companies are working for many years.

In that respect the Sinopec Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical  Technology developed its proprietary process to convert methanol into olefins.

Branded as Sinopec Methanol-To-Olefins (S-MTO), this new technology has been introduced in the Puyang Zhongyan plant in operations since 2011.

Using a new set of catalyst based on silicoaaluminophosphate (SAPO-34), the S-MTO provides the methanol conversion into ethylene and propylene at about 81% carbon selectivity.

After this successful full-scale test, Sinopec presented its technology at the Dresden DGKM Conference in Germany in October 2013.

Confident in Sinopec technology, China Coal takes a leap in the petrochemical industry in planning the world largest CTO complex based on the S-MTO technology.

In order to capitalize experience on this China critical project, Sinopec Engineering Group subsidiaries will be involved at all levels of the project.

Sinopec Engineering to perform Ordos CTO EPC+PMC

In addition to the S-MTO technology and the EPC contract, Sinopec Engineering Group will provide Zhong Tian He Chuang with project management consultancy (PMC) services for the production and logistic of the equipment.

With this organization Sinopec is expecting to hand over this $3.2 billion CTO petrochemical complex in less than two years for October 2015.

The Zhong Tian He Chuang CTO project will include:

 – Coal gasification unit

 – Coal purification unit

 – Coal-To-Methanol unit of 3.6 million tonnes per year (t/y)

 – Two Methanol-To-Olefins (S-MTO) units of 1.8 million t/y each

 – Olefin catalytic cracking unit of 200,000 t/y

 – Polypropylene unit (loop reactor) of 350,000 t/y

 – Polypropylene unit (gas reactor) of 350,000 t/y

 – Low density polyethylene (LDPE) unit (tank reactor) of 120,000 t/y

 – LDPE unit (tubular reactor) of 250,000 t/y

 – Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) unit of 300,000 t/y

 – 1-butylene unit of 30,000 t/y

 – Methyl Ter Butyl Ether (MTBE) unit of 10,000 t/y

 – Offsites and Utilities

 – Air Compression unit

 – Olefins intermediates tank farm unit

In providing China Coal with the S-MTO technology, fast track EPC  contract and PMC services for the Ordos, Inner Mongolia, Coal-To-Olefins project, Sinopec is building a unique business model to take the global market leadership on the coal-based petrochemical industry.
