SAGE to build Middle-East To India Deepwater Gas Pipeline

South Asia Gas Enterprise at work on 1,300 km MEIDP

The Indian joint venture South Asia Gas Enterprise Pvt Ltd (SAGE) is now preparing the front end engineering and design (FEED) for its deepwater transnational gas pipeline called Middle-East to India Deepwater Pipeline (MEIDP) to import gas from Iran and Oman into India.

Despite its own reserves and on going offshore fields development on the east and west coasts of India, this country is continuously running short of gas supply as a result of its booming economical growth.

SAGE_Middle-East-to-India-Deepwater-gas-Pipeline_MEIDP_Project_mapA number of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and regasification facilities are also in construction to import LNG from the main producing countries.

But the LNG market may be difficult to predict in the future in the region with more producers on one side but bigger consumers on the other side causing the regional prices to fluctuate hardly up and down.

In this context India has considered a 1,300 kilometers pipeline project to connect Middle-East rich gas fields to India through the Arabian Sea.

To be developed in phases, the MEIDP project should start from Chabahar on the southern coast of Iran and from Ras Al-Jafan on the northeastern coast of Oman.

These two branches of the Middle-East to India Deepwater Pipeline should merge in the subsea deepwater of the Oman Gulf before crossing the Arabia Sea up to Porbandar in the State of South Gujarat in India.

With Omani hub, SAGE is eyeing on importing natural gas with its Middle-East to India Deepwater gas Pipeline project from the GCC countries, while Iran hub should also pipe gas from Turkmenistan.

SAGE to phase Deepwater Transnational Gas Pipeline

Among other challenges, most of the 1,300 kilometers of the MEIDP project should be laid down subsea in ultra deep water of 3,450 meter depth.

As a result of the MEIDP-1 and MEIDP-2 projects, this Middle-East to India Deepwater gas Pipeline should have a capacity of 1.1 billion cubic feet per day (cf/d) of natural gas.

Since 1990s years, India mobilized key companies of its private sector to study, set partnerships, design, build and operate this challenging Middle-East to India Deepwater Gas Pipeline.

During 15 years this India-led project was slow moving because of the lack of technologies to build and install such complex deepwater pipeline.

But these last two years, the Europan partners involved in the MEIDP project have been able to provide SAGE with the solutions to build such heavy pipeline and to install it down on the ultra deepwater seabed with new generation of pipelay vessels.

After completing the design basis, SAGE defined that the Middle-East to India Deepwater gas Pipeline should include:

SAGE_Oman-to-India-Deepwater-gas-Pipeline_MEIDP_Project_map – Onshore Oman Middle-East Compression Station (MECS)

 – Offshore Gas Compression Station (OGCS)

 – Onshore Gujarat Pipeline Receiving Terminal (GPRT)

This offshore compression station is still an option, that should be installed on the Murray Ridge in the Arabian Sea300 kilometers southeast the coast of Sultanate of Oman.

In this scheme, SAGE will invest more than $4,000 million capital expenditure and will act only as the gas carrier paid by transportation fees between the gas sellers in Middle-East and the gas buyers in India.

From actual progress, SAGE is planning to start FEED work on the Middle-East to India Deepwater gas Pipeline project in 2015 in targeting the completion of the MEIDP-1 by 2022 and MEIDP-2 by 2026.
