Sabic invests $100 million in Shanghai Technology Center

Sabic takes a decisive leap in breaking-ground for this $100 million capital expenditures in Technology Center in Kangqiao, close to Pudong Airport, east of Shanghai.

This Technology Center will use 60,000 sqm in a brand new building to host 400 employees, including 200 scientists and engineers working in Research & Development.

The purpose of this Technology Center is to develop advanced engineering plastics materials to meet the demand of the Chinese industry in automotive, personal electronics, IT, alternative energy, building and constructions to infrastructures.

The booming Automotive sector will concentrate the highest attention in creating the dedicated China Automotive Innovation Hub for the design and development of next generation energy-efficient vehicles.

In doing so, Sabic is not only setting a sustainable relationship with its Chinese customers, but is also building an advanced petrochemical expertise in the most dynamic market to be then deployed on a global basis.

This decision illustrates the strategy of Saudi and Gulf petrochemical industry to rely not only on the low costs of their feedstock to sustain their competitive advantage, but also on the downstream activities to increase added value.

Moving from bulk petrochemical to specialties supposes the actors to get closer to their market. Thus we should see more and more of these Sabic examples in the near future.

With environmental sustainability in mind, the center will be built with the highest global green standards in line with the guidance by the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Gold Certification. The global certification standard provides industry verification that the facility has been designed and built to achieve high performance in key areas such as: sustainable site development water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

The completion of Sabic Technology Center is scheduled in 2013.
