The Johan Sverdrup giant oil field is the largest oil field discovery in 2011 in the World and the fifth biggest ever in Norway.
It is located 140 kM west of Stavanger and sitting by 110 M water depth and about 2000 m deep below the sea level.
The Swedish Lundin and Statoil were exploring this field so far on their respective blocks PL 501 and PL 265.
But to increase the co-operation between both companies and to share valuable information and data about their respective fields, Statoil and Lundin signed a pre-unitisation agreement to the project.
In order to optimize exploration and production resources, Lundin and Statoil agreed that the Norwegian company would become the operator for the entire field among the other partners involved such as Mearsk and Petoro.
They also gave to Aker Solutions the contract for a conceptual study of the offshore development which should request a significant number of platforms.
This project should not be unique only by its size but also because of of the technologies deployed for its development such as a full electrification of the platforms with power coming subsea from the shore.
