Isononanol

Definition

IsononanolIsononanol (INA) is the common name of Isononyl alcohol and is an isomer of the C9 family.

Isononanol should formally be writen Iso-Nonanol

Isononanol may also be called Oxo-alcohol

Comments

Isononanol appears as a clear, colorless, flammable liquid without visible impurities.

Isononanol may be recognized by its specific odor but should be handled with care as its vapors may cause drowsiness and dizziness and even form explosive mixtures with air.

It disolves slightly in the water but easily in organic solvents.

Isononanol is produced from hydroformalation, hydrogenation, distillation, and refinement of octenes issued from the dimerization of octane.

Because of its alcohol characteristics, Isononanol is a feedstock for the production of plasticizers, such as:

 – DINP (Di-Isononyl Phthalate)

 – DINA (Di- Isononyl Adipate)

 – TINTM(Tri-Isononyl Trimellitate)

Isononanol and the plasticizers produced out of it are recognized to produce performance plastics as contributing to the enhancement of the capabilities of the classical thermoplastics.

Because of their extended performances, they are used in many applications:

Isononanol – Building and construction

 – Home dressing and insultation

 – Automotive parts

 – Electrical wiring and cables

 – Adult hygiene products and disposable diapers with super absorbent polymers
