The national oil company (NOC), CPC Corporation Taiwan (CPC), is planning to proceed with the third phase of Taichung liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at the Port of Taichung in Taiwan.

Taiwan ranks as the fifth largest importer of LNG in the world.
It needs natural gas for cooking, heating and producing electricity, especially since it has decided to transit its energy supply from coal and nuclear to natural gas.
Therefore, Taiwan is ramping up it import capacities by increasing the existing LNG terminals or adding new terminals.
At the end of 2019, CPC completed the first expansion of the Taichung LNG terminal (Taichung LNG Terminal Phase 2).
CPC should carry out this new expansion (Taichung LNG Terminal Phase 3) through the addition of another berth and associated tanks in two phases:
- 2 million t/y of regasification capacity will be added by 2023
- 2.7 million t/y remaining capacity will be added by 2026
CPC will expand the LNG receiving, storage, and re-gasification capabilities at the port and add a new station infrastructure.
The project includes:
- Two 180,000 cubic meter (m3) LNG storage tanks
- 1,600 tonnes per hour (t/hr) gasification facility

This expansion project will increase LNG receiving station capacity to 10 million t/y.
CPC awarded the front-end engineering and design (FEED) and project management consultancy (PMC) contracts to the French Sofregaz.
Sofregaz should complete the FEED work by the end of 2021.
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) will follow in 2022 for completion by 2026.
— April 2022 —
CPC awarded the EPC contract to JGC led consortium involving Taiwanese construction firm RSEA Engineering Corporation, Taiwan’s Do & Find Engineering Consultants .
— July 2022 —
CPC awarded the FEED and EPC for the storage tanks to Bechtel.
